Polybuzz operates two internal model tiers — Tale for standard conversation and Passion for content that Character.AI's house model won't generate. Both are house-trained models, not third-party APIs. The Passion tier is why users looking for less-restricted content migrate to Polybuzz from Character.AI.
Character.AI runs a single house model, Pipsqueak 2, which became the default for every user on April 28, 2026 after Roar and Pawly were retired. The content policy is stricter than Polybuzz's — persona replies get filtered in ways that many long-time users describe as breaking character. Net: if content flexibility is the axis, Polybuzz wins. If model consistency across a huge character catalog matters more, Character.AI still holds the volume advantage.
Memory architecture
Both platforms fall short compared to companion-focused products, but they fall short differently.
Character.AI uses session-only rolling context. Every conversation is a cold start. Users report coherence starts breaking around turn 21 as the context window fills up. There's no cross-session memory of what you told her yesterday.
Polybuzz has slightly better session persistence but still leans on context-window memory rather than true extracted facts. On free tier, memory limitations are more pronounced — the platform incentivizes upgrading to paid tiers by capping context on free.
