What is Polybuzz
Polybuzz launched as Poly.AI and rebranded in 2025 to distance from a naming conflict with a separate voice-AI company. The core product is an AI chat platform with user-created and platform-curated character personas — similar shape to Character.AI, positioned as a looser-content alternative.
The platform runs on its own trained models rather than third-party APIs. Two model tiers: Tale (standard conversation) and Passion (content Tale won't generate). This is different from bring-your-own-model platforms like Janitor AI where the user connects an external API key — Polybuzz handles model hosting internally.
Catalog size sits between Character.AI (millions of user-created bots) and curated companion products (dozens of hand-written personas). Enough variety to browse; not overwhelming.
Models — Tale vs Passion
Tale is the default model that handles the majority of Polybuzz conversations. Standard AI chat capabilities — persona consistency within a session, context window memory, tone matching to the character profile.
Passion is the tier that users looking for less-restricted content upgrade for. It handles the more explicit character interactions that Tale won't generate. Access requires paid subscription; the specific tier structure changes periodically.
Quality-wise: both models sit in the mid-range of AI chat quality. Not as polished as top-tier commercial models, noticeably better than early open-source alternatives. Response speed is reasonable. Character consistency within a conversation is decent; cross-session consistency depends on the memory system, which is limited.
Pricing — subscription plus coins
This is where Polybuzz's model catches most users off-guard.
Base subscription unlocks the paid features. But on top of that, Polybuzz runs a coin economy for specific actions — generation, premium interactions, and some feature access. Coins get consumed per action; when you run out, features throttle until you buy more.
The issue isn't that coins exist — plenty of products use credit systems. The issue is that many users assume the subscription IS the full spend, then hit the coin wall mid-conversation and discover the actual monthly cost is subscription + however many coin packs you burn through.
If predictable monthly spend matters, flat-subscription alternatives (Sloane, Nomi) that don't layer coins on top are the shape to look at. How much should you pay for an AI girlfriend covers the pricing shapes in more detail.
Memory limitations
Polybuzz memory is context-window-based, not extracted-fact-based. What that means in practice: the character remembers what you said within the current session (up to the context window limit), but there's no persistent "she remembers your name three weeks later" behavior.
On free tier, context window is smaller — characters forget earlier parts of the same session faster. Paid tiers extend the window but don't change the fundamental architecture.
This is a category-wide problem — Character.AI has the same limitation. Products built memory-first (Nomi's long-term memory feature, Sloane's extracted-facts architecture) solve it architecturally. If cross-session persistence is your top priority, Polybuzz isn't the fit.
Where Polybuzz fits — and where it doesn't
Polybuzz fits well if: you want a Character.AI-style catalog experience with less-restricted content, you're comfortable managing the coin economy, and cross-session memory isn't your top priority.
Polybuzz doesn't fit if: you want predictable flat monthly pricing without a coin layer, you need the character to remember you across weeks, or you want the massive catalog scale of Character.AI without the content restrictions.
Alternatives worth comparing: Character.AI (bigger catalog, stricter content), Sloane ($9.99/month flat with 20 custom photos + unlimited chat, curated ~80-persona roster, persistent memory), Nomi (memory-first architecture), Janitor AI (bring-your-own-model, more technical setup).
Honest catch on Polybuzz: the platform is real, the models work, but the pricing model is the friction most users hit. Understand the coin economy before subscribing.
