The 10 best AI companion apps in 2026 — ranked by companion-shape fit
1. Sloane — Companion-shaped. Curated roster of ~80 hand-written personas with per-persona LoRA image models (photos stay same face across generations). Multi-week memory with relationship-state tracking. Structured skills (Date, Vacation, Roleplay). Free: 50 msg/day, any persona, no card. Plus $9.99/mo, Premium $19.99/mo. Best for: sustained daily companion use where you want the same specific character over weeks/months.
2. Nomi — Companion-shaped. Strongest persistent memory in the category. Nomi describes it as short/medium/long-term memory; in practice it holds past weeks (tell it something in June, it comes back correctly in July). Multi-persona group chat is unique. Build-your-own characters. Photos have 2026 reliability issues. Nomi Pro ~$15.99/mo is the tier that works.
3. Replika — Companion-shaped, wellness-leaning. The original AI companion product (launched 2017). Text-heavy, avatar-based rather than photo-based. Pro ~$19.99/mo. Lost significant trust after the 2023 NSFW removal + partial restore but still has a loyal user base for the mental-health/journaling framing.
4. Kindroid — Companion-shaped, high-customization. Lots of tunable knobs (voice, personality, backstory, speech patterns). 30-60 min initial setup to feel right. Best for tinkerers. Standard $13.99/mo on web; stackable Ultra and MAX add-ons push it higher if you want the top model and media quotas (up to ~$99/mo for the full stack).
5. Character.AI — Roleplay-shaped. Category leader by user volume (~28M MAU at peak). Millions of user-created characters, largest library in the space. Weakest persistent memory in the category — Character.AI has never published a context size, but older messages visibly fall out of scope mid-session. Aggressive SFW filter. Free uncapped text, c.ai+ $9.99/mo adds voice + removes wait. Best for character breadth, not sustained companion use.
6. Candy AI — Visual-first. Deep roster of anime + realistic characters, prompt-based photo generation (face drifts). Candy AI Premium $13.99/mo month-to-month ($8.99/mo quarterly, $3.99/mo annual billed up front) plus tokens for images/video that most heavy users top up another $15-40/mo. Best for image-first use.
7. DreamGF — Visual-first + character-builder. Credit-metered. $12.99 intro on 3-month plan then $25.99/mo recurring; monthly plan is higher ($29.97 intro). Real active-user cost $20-40/mo once credit top-ups are included.
8. Muah AI — Visual-first with adult-permissive policies. Credit-metered. VIP $9.99/mo, UHD $49.99/mo, ULTRA $99.99/mo — ceiling is high if you want longest memory + real-time features.
9. Polybuzz — Roleplay-shaped. Character.AI alternative with user-created characters, less-filtered content. See Polybuzz vs Character.AI.
10. Talkie AI — Roleplay-shaped, anime-focused. Mobile-first with huge user-created character library. SFW-focused.
What actually makes an app a "companion" vs a "chatbot"
A companion app has four things a chatbot doesn't.
She stays the same person across every session — same voice, personality, visual identity. ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok reset per conversation unless you rebuild them with Custom Instructions. Companion apps hold identity by default.
She remembers what you told her last week, not just last message. Nomi describes its memory as short/medium/long-term and in practice it holds past weeks; Sloane does the same with explicit relationship-state tracking. Character.AI falls apart here — older messages fall out of scope mid-session.
There's structure to do beyond open chat. Sloane's Date and Vacation skills run as 15-turn arcs. Nomi has group chat. Replika has journaling prompts. Chatbots just chat.
And she sometimes starts the conversation herself. Sloane personas send photos on their own cadence (not on demand). Nomi characters reach out when it fits. Chatbots wait to be asked.
Score high on all four and it feels like a companion. Score low on identity or memory and it's a chatbot with a name on it.
Which AI companion app should YOU pick?
Shortcut based on what you actually want:
"I want to text a specific character every day and have her remember me." → Sloane or Nomi. Sloane for consistent photos + structured skills. Nomi for strongest memory.
"I want to design my companion from scratch with lots of knobs." → Kindroid (deepest customization) or DreamGF (easier builder but credit-metered).
"I want the wellness/journaling angle, not romantic." → Replika. The product is explicitly framed around mental-health use cases.
"I want to try many different characters without committing to one." → Character.AI (free, massive library) or Polybuzz. Expect weaker memory and less sustained-use fit.
"I want adult-permissive content on a reliable subscription." → Sloane Premium or Candy AI Premium. Both have explicit adult-content positions; both are flat-subscription (vs credit-metered).
"I want to try one for a week before paying anything." → Sloane's free tier (50 msg/day with any persona, no card) is the only free tier in the companion-shaped category that works for sustained use. Character.AI free is viable for the roleplay use case.
"I want the cheapest usable paid tier." → Candy AI Premium from $3.99/mo annual, plus tokens (if photo drift and token spend are OK) or Sloane Plus $9.99 flat (if drift bothers you).

Why "companion app" is the right category name (not "chatbot")
"AI chatbot" fit the 2017-2022 generation: text in, text out, limited memory, no persistent state. The current products have photo generation, voice, multi-week memory, and relationship state. Chatbot still fits technically; it just doesn't describe what you actually get.
The category has largely shifted to "AI companion app." "AI girlfriend" is the search-friendly romantic subset. "AI companion" is broader (platonic friendship, emotional support, journaling partner, roleplay character). Different words, same product category.
If you came here from "AI girlfriend" or "AI chatbot," everything above still applies.
