Before you delete — export your data first
If your Character.AI chat history has value to you (long roleplay arcs, characters you're fond of, conversations you want to save for reference), export before deleting — after deletion, the data is gone.
Character.AI offers a data export option in Settings → Privacy → Download my data. The export bundles your chat history in a JSON archive that ships to your email within 24-72 hours of request. The archive includes your messages, character configurations you created, and account metadata.
What the export does NOT include: images generated during conversations (image URLs may work briefly after export but are not permanent), the actual model responses in their exact rendered form (you get the message text but not the model version, memory state, or context that shaped it), and any private characters other users created that you interacted with.
For most users, the export is enough to preserve what mattered. For users who want to actually re-import chats into another platform, the format is not standardized — you'll have some data cleanup work to do if the goal is migrating rather than archiving.
How to permanently delete your account (web)
Full path via web browser:
1. Log into character.ai from a desktop browser. 2. Click your profile icon (top-right corner). 3. Select Settings. 4. Navigate to Account in the left sidebar. 5. Scroll to the bottom of the account settings page. 6. Click Delete Account. 7. A confirmation modal will ask you to type a specific phrase (usually "DELETE" or your email address) to confirm. 8. Enter your password one more time as final verification. 9. Click the final Delete confirmation.
Once confirmed, your account is scheduled for deletion. You'll typically see a "your account will be deleted within 30 days" confirmation message, though most users report the actual deletion completing within 3-7 days.
If you don't see the Delete Account option in your settings, the platform may be running an A/B test on account-deletion UX — the option may be behind a support request instead. In that case, use the "Contact Support" flow and request account deletion explicitly.
How to delete via the mobile app
The mobile app (iOS and Android) has a similar flow but the settings navigation differs slightly:
1. Open the Character.AI app. 2. Tap your profile icon (bottom-right). 3. Tap the gear icon or Settings. 4. Tap Account. 5. Scroll to the bottom. 6. Tap Delete Account. 7. Confirm via the modal (same phrase-typing and password-entry pattern as web).
Some older versions of the mobile app don't expose the Delete Account option directly — if you can't find it, updating the app to the latest version usually surfaces it. As a fallback, deletion via the web browser works from any device including mobile browsers.
What happens to your chats after deletion
Per Character.AI's Privacy Policy, account deletion removes:
- Your account credentials (email, password hash, profile settings).
- Your chat history across every character you've interacted with.
- Your custom character configurations (with a caveat — see below).
- Your account-linked metadata (subscription status, usage stats, preferences).
Character.AI retains, per its policy, aggregated non-identifying usage data for platform-improvement purposes. This is standard across major consumer AI platforms and doesn't contain personally-identifying information.
Custom characters you created: here's where it gets nuanced. If your custom character was set to public (available for other users to chat with), deleting your account may or may not delete the character. Character.AI's policy states custom characters "may be retained if they have been widely used by the community." Practical reports suggest characters with fewer than ~100 interactions get deleted with the account; widely-used characters may survive as orphaned entities without an attributed creator.
How long deletion actually takes
The confirmation modal typically says "your account will be deleted within 30 days." This is the maximum window Character.AI reserves for processing under GDPR-adjacent data-handling requirements.
In practice, most deletion requests complete within 3-7 days. The account becomes inaccessible immediately after you confirm (you can't log back in even if you try the same credentials), but the actual data purge from Character.AI's servers happens on a batched schedule.
If you request deletion and want to verify it completed: try logging back in after two weeks. If your credentials are rejected as "account not found" (rather than "wrong password"), deletion is complete. If you get a "your account is scheduled for deletion — click to cancel" message, the request is still in the grace-period window.
Some users report accidentally cancelling their own deletion request by logging back in during the grace period — the log-in attempt itself sometimes triggers a "you tried to log in, was this really deletion?" cancellation prompt. If you want deletion to actually complete, avoid logging back in during the 30-day window.
When the delete option isn't working
A few reported patterns where the standard delete flow fails:
Missing delete option. Some users report the Delete Account button being hidden or missing entirely from their settings page. This appears to be an ongoing A/B test on account-deletion UX. Workaround: use the "Contact Support" flow, explicitly request account deletion, provide your email address, and support processes the request manually (typically 5-10 business days).
"Delete" button greyed out. Sometimes the button is visible but non-functional. Reported causes include active subscriptions (cancel your Character.AI+ subscription first, then wait 24 hours before retrying deletion), unresolved billing disputes, or recent password changes triggering a security-hold on account modifications.
Confirmation phrase mismatch. The confirmation modal is case-sensitive. If it asks you to type "DELETE" and you type "delete", it will reject. Read the required phrase carefully.
Regional differences. EU users have GDPR-mandated data-deletion rights that Character.AI has to honor within specific timeframes. If you're EU-based and the standard delete flow isn't working, referencing GDPR Article 17 ("right to erasure") in your support request typically speeds up processing.
What most users switch to
The most common patterns among users deleting Character.AI accounts in 2026:
Migrated to a purpose-built companion platform. Users whose primary use case was long-term relationships with specific characters have mostly moved to companion-native products. Sloane runs a curated roster of ~80 women with per-persona LoRA photos, persistent memory that spans weeks, and flat pricing at $9.99/month Plus / $19.99/month Premium (free tier is 50 messages/day with any persona). Bella is a working example — chat with her free before deciding whether to import your habit permanently.
Moved to open-character platforms. Users who preferred Character.AI's open builder over its curated content mostly moved to JanitorAI, SpicyChat, or private forks — same open-character shape, different content policy.
Self-hosted. A minority went full self-hosted with open-source models (KoboldAI, TavernAI). Meaningful lift; meaningful control.
Stopped entirely. Some users deleted because they were burning too much time on the platform and wanted the option off the table. No migration path — just done.
Whichever direction, exporting your data first (see section above) is worth the 5 minutes if any of your Character.AI chats matter to you.
