What the "Sorry, you have been blocked" error actually means
Character.AI uses Cloudflare for security and bot protection. Every request to the site passes through Cloudflare's bot-detection layer, which scores each request against dozens of signals (IP reputation, browser fingerprint, request pattern, JavaScript execution behavior, etc.) and decides whether to let it through, show a challenge, or block it outright.
When you see "Sorry, you have been blocked" or a Cloudflare error page with a number like 1020, 1015, or 4xxx, your request scored high enough on Cloudflare's risk signals that it triggered a block rather than a challenge. This can happen for reasons that have nothing to do with you personally — a shared VPN IP that someone else abused, an ad-blocker that blocks the JavaScript Cloudflare needs to score you, a browser too old to run the challenge properly, or a burst of requests that looked automated even though it wasn't.
The key point: Cloudflare's scoring is probabilistic. Real humans get blocked regularly. It's not a judgment about you; it's a false positive in an anti-abuse system that has to make quick decisions on incomplete signals.
What typically triggers the block on Character.AI
Five patterns account for most Cloudflare blocks on Character.AI.
VPN or proxy IP. Shared VPN IPs get flagged constantly because other users on the same IP may have abused Character.AI or other Cloudflare-protected sites. This is the single most common cause — if you're on a VPN, disable it and retry first.
Outdated browser. Cloudflare has progressively dropped support for older browser engines through 2026. If Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge is more than a few versions behind, the challenge script may fail to execute, which Cloudflare treats as suspicious.
Aggressive ad-blockers or privacy extensions. Extensions like uBlock Origin with aggressive filter lists, Ghostery, "hardened" privacy tools, and some anti-tracking browser modes can block the JavaScript Cloudflare needs to verify you're human. 1. Disable your VPN or proxy if you have one on. Retry after 30 seconds. If it works, the VPN's IP was the issue.
2. Update your browser to the latest version. Cloudflare has quietly stopped supporting older engines through 2026 — Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge all need to be current.
3. Disable ad-blockers and privacy extensions for character.ai specifically. In most extensions this is one-click via the extension icon. Reload the page.
4. Wait 5-10 minutes without retrying. Cloudflare's rate-limit windows expire; hitting refresh continuously prolongs the block instead of clearing it.

Probably on your side: the error appears on some networks/browsers/devices but not others. You can access other sites fine. The error resolves after disabling VPN or updating your browser.

Character.AI has had multiple significant outages traced to Cloudflare issues in 2026 — an April 26-27 incident took the platform down for around 8 hours. During those windows, no amount of your-side troubleshooting will help; the platform itself is down. Waiting is the only fix.

What Sloane does differently on access
