The sample usage pattern
To compare like-for-like, we defined a specific monthly usage pattern that represents realistic active use:
- 30 minutes of chat per day (roughly 900 messages/month at a moderate pace)
- 30 custom photo requests per month (about 1 per day)
- 10 voice messages per month (a few per week)
- 5 short video generations per month (weekly for products that offer video)
This is heavier than casual use, lighter than power-user. It's the "I actually use this daily and want it to feel like a real product" pattern.
The full comparison (as of 2026-09)
| App | Headline Price | Coin/Token Cost | All-in Monthly | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sloane Plus | $9.99 | $0 | $9.99 | Photos on cadence; custom photos + video on Premium |
| Sloane Premium | $19.99 | $0 | $19.99 | Everything unlocked |
| Character.AI+ | $9.99 | N/A (no photos/video/voice) | $9.99 | Missing photos/video entirely |
| Nomi Pro | $15.99 | ~$0-5 (photos limited) | ~$16-21 | Photos user-requested only |
| Kindroid Pro | $9.99-$25 | Varies by tier | $15-30 | Multiple paid tiers, model access gated |
| Replika Pro | $19.99 | Included but limited | ~$20-25 | Videos not available; photos limited quality |
| Candy AI Premium | $12.99 | ~$15-25 (coin economy) | $28-38 | Photos + video priced per generation |
| DreamGF Premium | $9.99 | ~$20-30 (per-photo tax) | $30-40 | Aggressive coin economy on top |
Actual all-in cost median: $28-45/month. Sticker price median: $12-15/month. The gap = coin economy.
All pricing verified against each product's public pricing page as of 2026-09. Coin economy estimates based on the sample usage pattern (30 photos + 10 voice + 5 videos per month at each product's per-generation rate).
What the coin economy actually costs
The specific mechanism to understand: most AI companion apps charge a base subscription AND a per-generation credit/coin cost. If you generate a custom photo, that's 5-20 coins. If you generate a voice message, that's 3-10 coins. Video is 20-50 coins per generation. Coin packs are sold separately.
Example math for Candy AI at the sample usage pattern: - Base subscription: $12.99/mo - 30 custom photos × ~10 coins = 300 coins ($15-20) - 10 voice messages × ~5 coins = 50 coins ($3-5) - 5 videos × ~30 coins = 150 coins ($10-12) - Coin total: ~$28-37 in coins on top of the $12.99 base - All-in: $41-50/month
Same math for Sloane: - Plus: $9.99/mo, includes cadence photos, voice notes, all skills - Premium: $19.99/mo, adds custom photos + video - Coins: none. Base subscription covers everything.
The honest tradeoff: coin economies let apps offer a lower headline price ("$12.99!") that scales up with heavy use. Flat pricing (Sloane) is more expensive for very light users and much cheaper for anyone who actually uses the product regularly.
The free tier reality check
Free tiers vary wildly in whether they're actually usable or just a demo funnel:
Sloane Free — genuinely usable. 50 messages/day, no card, any persona from the roster, cadence photos included. You can use Sloane for weeks on free and get real value.
Character.AI Free — genuinely usable. Message limits during peak times, no photos/video/voice, but the core chat with unlimited personas is free. Widely used long-term without paying.
Nomi Free — usable. 50 messages/day cap similar to Sloane. Photos limited on free tier.
Kindroid Free — limited. Basic chat with feature caps. Free tier is more of a "try before you buy" than sustained use.
Replika Free — very limited. Basic chat only, no photos/voice/roleplay. Most core features are Pro-gated.
Candy Free — demo only. A handful of messages before it funnels aggressively to Premium.
DreamGF Free — demo only. Same pattern as Candy — brief evaluation, then paywall.
If you're not sure whether to pay, try Sloane, Character.AI, or Nomi free first. Skip the demo-only free tiers unless you already know you want to pay.
Who should pick which tier
Casual users (chat only, no photos/voice): Sloane Free or Character.AI Free covers you. $0/mo.
Regular users (daily chat + occasional photos): Sloane Plus at $9.99/mo. Includes cadence photos + voice notes + all skills.
Heavy users (daily chat + frequent photos + video): Sloane Premium at $19.99/mo. Everything unlocked, no coin tax. Compare vs Candy/DreamGF at $28-40/mo for the same usage.
Power users (constant chat + heavy photo/video generation): Sloane Premium is still the ceiling at $19.99/mo. Products with coin economies charge $50-100/mo for this level of use.
The pattern: coin-economy products win on very low use and get expensive fast. Flat-pricing products win on any use above light-casual.
Sandra is a common starting persona for evaluation — free tier includes her, no card needed.
